Sigma has patented a new 24-105mm lens in Japan, but this model features a maximum aperture of f/2.8-4, instead of the constant f/4 aperture found in the model currently available on the market.

Photographers are anxiously waiting for Sigma to release new lenses on the market. The reasons for that consist of their prices and optical quality. The Japan-based company has proven its ability to make affordable optics which provide a high image quality, so it is easy to understand why its fans are so excited about future models.

In recent times, there is one exception of a lens that has failed to meet the demands of the users. The 24-105mm f/4 lens is said to be a failure, as its image quality is not so good, while its price is very close to the price of its Canon and Nikon counterparts.

At some point, the lens has gone missing from store shelves, suggesting the fact that the company has discontinued it in order to focus on other projects. Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki has denied the claims, while admitting that this lens is not selling well.

As a result, it has been taken out of production momentarily. However, Mr. Yamaki has confirmed that the product has been ordered enough times in recent weeks, therefore it will become available once again.

Anyway, it seems like the company has more plans within this focal range. A Sigma 24-105mm f/2.8-4 DG OS HSM Art lens has been patented in Japan and could become available at some point in the future.

One patent application does not mean that the lens is close to its launch

The patent description is talking about a Sigma 24-105mm f/2.8-4 DG OS HSM Art lens, which comes with 17 elements arranged in 13 groups. The patent was filed on September 13, 2013 and the regulatory agencies approved it on March 23, 2015.

The lens comes packed with anti-vibration technology in order to reduce the effects of hand and camera shaking. An inner focusing mechanism is present, too, in order to make sure that the front lens element does not rotate when focusing.

This lens includes four aspherical elements, one “F” Low Dispersion element, and three Extraordinary Low Dispersion elements, which will make sure that the image quality is among the highest possible.

If such model were to come on the market, then it might render the current 24-105mm f/4 useless. This means that there are few chances of seeing it in the near future. Nevertheless, we should not rule out anything in the more distant future.
