Sigma has patented a new super-telephoto prime lens for full-frame DSLR cameras. It offers a 400mm focal length along with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and it would be added to the company’s Sports series.

The latest lens to be introduced by Sigma is a wide-angle unit with a 24mm focal length and an f/1.4 maximum aperture. It was revealed in early February 2015, right before the start of the CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015 event.

While the company hinted that a 24-70mm f/2.8 Art optic could become official soon, it has patented a different lens, one that will be a part of another line-up. Sources in Japan have discovered that Sigma has patented a 400mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports-series optic, which will be aimed at action photographers.

Patent for Sigma 400mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens shows up in Japan

One of the most praised third-party lens makers, Sigma, could take the world by surprise with another product. Ever since it has split its line-up intro three categories, the company has mostly launched critically-acclaimed optics.

For the time being, the Sports series consists of two units: 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM and 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM. Both of them are telephoto zoom models, but the third one might be a telephoto prime.

A Sigma 400mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens patent has been discovered in Japan. Just like its siblings, it has been designed for DSLR cameras with full-frame sensors and it comes packed with a built-in Optical Stabilizer in order to reduce the effects of camera shakes and to allow photographers to shoot great photos even in low-light conditions.

The lens is said to have a minimum focusing distance of 2.7 meters, so users will be able to maintain a fair distance to their subjects during a photo shoot.

The patent for the Sigma 400mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens was filed on September 4, 2013 and it was approved on April 9, 2015.

The optic’s internal design consists of 16 elements divided into 12 groups. It includes four FLD (F Low Dispersion) elements and on ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) element.

Beside the anti-vibration mechanism, the lens also features an inner focusing system. This means that the front lens element does not rotate during focusing, a trait welcomed by photographers who use filters and other accessories on their lenses.

It will be interesting to see this product on the market. However, it will not be cheap, so you may want to start saving right now. Either way, it may still have a long way to go from a patent to an actual product, so do not hold your breath over it.
