Sony has registered the “A5100” name at an agency in Indonesia, which suggests the fact that the Sony A5000 E-mount mirrorless camera will be replaced sometime in the near future.

The first time we heard about the Sony A5000 we thought that it represented just another version of the Sony NEX-5T. While this may be true, the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera has been introduced as a standalone model at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014.

It has become the second model of the brand new Alpha-series with E-mount lens support and an APS-C image sensor. The first model of the line-up is the A3000, which was unveiled in August 2013, while the third is the higher-end A6000, which was revealed in February 2013.

Even though it was launched at CES 2014, the A5000 may be on the verge of being replaced. The Sony A5100 name has been spotted at an Indonesian agency, called Postel, where names of upcoming cameras are leaked quite often.

The Sony A5100 name has been spotted on the websites of an Indonesian agency. The camera will be made in Thailand and it is likely to feature built-in WiFi and NFC.

Postel is usually the place where devices with wireless connectivity must be registered before becoming available on the market. This is why we can assume that the Sony A5100 will come packed with WiFi and NFC, just like its predecessor.

Another confirmed information about the A5000 replacement is that the mirrorless camera will be made in Thailand.

Unfortunately, this is pretty much everything we know about the A5100 at this point. This is the first time the camera was mentioned, but it would not be a surprise if it becomes official around the Photokina 2014.

Either way, do not hold your breath over it and wait for more details!

About the Sony A5000 E-mount mirrorless interchangeable lens camera

The Sony A5000 was introduced at the CES 2014 with a 20.1-megapixel APS-C image sensor, BIONZ X image processor, built-in WiFi, and NFC.

It sports a 3-inch articulated LCD touchscreen on its back and does not feature an integrated viewfinder. This means that photographers will have to rely on the display to compose their shots.

The A5000 is capable of recording videos at full HD resolution, while photos are shot at a shutter speed range between 1/4000th of a second and 30 seconds.

Other features worth mentioning are a maximum ISO of 16,000 and the ability to capture 4fps in continuous shooting mode. The Sony A5000 is available at Amazon for a price around $450.
