Sony will allegedly announce the development of a Zeiss-branded ultra-fast telephoto prime lens for E-mount cameras with full frame image sensors at the Photokina 2014 event.

Zeiss has already revealed that it is working on a new Otus-series lens with an 85mm focal length and f/1.4 maximum aperture. It will be introduced at the Photokina 2014 for Canon and Nikon full frame cameras as a high-quality optic to continue the legacy of the ultra-expensive 55mm f/1.4 Otus model.

Nevertheless, the Germany-based manufacturer has many other plans. SonyAlphaRumors is reporting that Sony will take the wraps off of its FE-mount lens roadmap at the largest digital imaging fair in the world this September.

Among the new optics, the company’s fans will be able to find an ultra-fast telephoto prime lens aimed at E-mount full frame cameras, such as the A7, A7R, and A7S. The most likely candidate is said to be an 85mm optic, but with an f/1.8 maximum aperture instead of f/1.4 like the one provided by the Otus version.

This is the Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 lens for Sony FE-mount cameras. Zeiss might announce an 85mm version at the Photokina.

Sony rumored to add a fast 85mm lens to its FE-mount roadmap

A trusted source is claiming that an 85mm lens with a fast aperture will be added to the Sony FE-mount roadmap at the Photokina 2014. Other optics have not been mentioned, while the price, specs, and release date of this product are also unknown to us for now.

This is not the first time we have heard of such possibility, while the FE-mount line-up is in desperate need of faster, better lenses to match the immense quality of the A7-series of mirrorless cameras.

Sony has promised multiple times that more lenses are coming, while some employees have reportedly said that very fast telephoto primes are being looked at and should become available sometime in the future.

The model in question could be a Zeiss 85mm f/1.8 lens

On the other hand, other unproven sources are claiming that the upcoming model is a Zeiss 85mm f/1.8 lens. It would not be so surprising if this turns out to be the product in question, considering the relations between the two companies.

Additionally, Zeiss has made other 85mm lenses, so it would make sense to launch an f/1.8 version for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras with full frame sensors.

Nothing is set in stone for the time being, but one thing is for sure: the Zeiss FE 85mm f/1.8 lens will not be as expensive as the Otus 55mm f/1.4 optic for Nikon and Canon DSLRs, which is available for about $4,000 at Amazon.
