Sony is allegedly working on a mirrorless camera with a medium format sensor that might be unveiled at the Photokina 2016 event this September.

The biggest digital imaging show in the world is eagerly anticipated by photography fans. By the looks of it, plenty of exciting products will become official before the start of this event, including Canon 5D Mark IV and Olympus E-M1 Mark II.

Among the usual suspects, some surprising devices might find their way to the event. Trusted sources are claiming that a Sony medium format mirrorless camera is in development and will show up at Photokina 2016.

Sony medium format mirrorless camera rumored to be unveiled at Photokina 2016

The information is reportedly coming from an insider who has revealed spot-on tidbits in the past. This time, the insider spoke with someone who works in the distribution department for the Japanese company. He said that the PlayStation maker will launch the world’s first medium format mirrorless camera this year.

hasselblad-h6d-100c Sony medium format mirrorless camera coming to Photokina Rumors

Rumors say that Sony was so disappointed by the H6D-100c camera that it decided to make its own medium format camera.

It appears that Hasselblad is to “blame” for this project. Sony supplied the 100-megapixel sensor for the new H6D-100c, but the company was not impressed by Hasselblad’s efforts. The H6D-100c does not shoot 4K videos, yet, and its image processing software, called Phocus, cannot properly handle RAW files.

As a result, we might get to see a Sony medium format mirrorless camera as early as Photokina 2016. It would become the first product of its kind, as stated above. The source goes even further to suggest that the Japanese manufacturer will also reveal a bunch of lenses for this new format.

More details are expected to show up online through the grapevine sometime in June or July. Until then, it would be wise not to come to any conclusions.

Another high-end mirrorless camera from Sony is coming this September

One problem with this rumor is the fact that Sony is also working towards bringing another high-end product to Cologne, Germany this September. We are talking, of course, about A9, which is supposed to be a full-frame FE-mount MILC designed for professional photographers.

The device is said to be so good for sports photographers that it will offer unlimited RAW shooting. The camera will store photos on dual XQD memory cards, according to some reliable sources.

It would be a weird decision to launch a couple of high-profile products at a single event. Nevertheless, it might happen, as a lot of people are still expecting to see a flagship A-mount camera from the PlayStation giant.
