A Sony employee has confirmed that the company is looking into developing a camera that would fall into the space between the RX1 and RX100.

DSLR Magazine is a popular Spanish website. It is related to photography and, from time to time, it interviews employees from big camera manufacturers. The latest person to be interviewed by the website’s photo-journalists is Masaaki Oshima, Senior Manager of Product Design at Sony.

As one would image, the interview was not really focused on upcoming products, but Mr. Oshima revealed an interesting detail, which probably should have remained a secret. According to the Senior Manager, Sony is looking into the possibility of bridging the gap between the RX1 and RX100 cameras with the launch of a new compact shooter.

Sony’s Senior Manager, Masaaki Oshima, was caught red-handed during an interview, when he mentioned that the company investigated the possibility of releasing a new camera between the RX100 and RX1. Credits: DSLR Magazine.

Enough space for the Sony RX10 between the RX1 and RX100

The interview came to the part where Sony’s employee placed the RX1 and the RX100 next to each other. As there was a little bit of space between the two, the interviewer was curious whether there is “space” for a new camera between the two, because the RX100 costs about €600, while the RX1 costs about €3,000.

There is a huge price difference between the cameras and an in-between shooter would be more than welcomed by consumers. Masaaki Oshima did not confirm the existence of a so-called Sony RX10, but he mentioned that the company is currently the possibility of releasing a new compact camera. According to Oshima, Sony has not made a decision yet.

With rumors about a Sony NEX-3N and a couple of lenses pending to be released this year, there are few chances the Sony RX10 will become available in 2013. Additionally, the company is focused on the PlayStation event which takes place on February 20. The rumor mill suggests that the PlayStation 4 will be announced next week. However, Sony may have enough time to announce new digital imaging products during the event as well.
