Sony is now rumored to announce and release a full frame camera with a curved sensor, called RX2 or RX1s, sometime in early 2015 along with an Android smartphone that will employ a 2/3-inch-type curved sensor.

It would have been logical for Sony to introduce a replacement for the RX1R compact camera this summer for a number of reasons. The original RX1 was unveiled in 2012 with a full frame sensor, while the RX1R became official in 2013 with a similar sensor.

Additionally, Sony revealed the RX100 in 2012, the RX100 II in 2013, while the RX100 III was announced earlier this summer. This means that the RX1 series should have followed the same path.

The rumor mill has said that the Sony RX2 or RX1s will be launched this summer bearing the recently-introduced full frame curved sensor. However, it seems like this is no longer the case, as the compact camera will actually become official at the beginning of 2015.

Sony RX2 camera scheduled to be unveiled in early 2015 with a full frame curved sensor

Sony is preparing to revolutionize the market once again. A curved image sensor will be an important step in reducing the size of lenses while increasing image quality.

Such sensor is capable of achieving amazing sharpness even towards its corners, while the optical design of the lenses will be much simpler. There are plenty of advantages to add this technology into a camera and the best part about it is that the system is ready for prime time.

Unfortunately, it seems like the Sony RX2 camera will not be released on the market this year. Trusted sources are claiming that this compact camera is scheduled to be launched in early 2015.

The lens will be provided by Zeiss and will offer a focal length of 35mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.8. As the lens is said to be very compact, the overall size and weight of the camera will be greatly reduced.

This is an alleged photo of the Sony Xperia Z3X smartphone. The lens on the back of the device appears unnatural, but this may be a “side effect” of the large curved sensor.

During the curved sensor announcement, Sony has confirmed that a 2/3-inch version has been developed, too. Its destination includes smartphones and compact cameras.

It appears that an Android-powered mobile phone, called Xperia Z3X, will be the first of its kind to bear a 2/3-inch-type curved sensor. It will capture photos at a resolution of 22-megapixel.

The sensor will be accompanied by a special lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.2. This smartphone is poised to be revealed along with the next-generation RX full frame camera at the beginning of next year.

An alleged photo of the Sony Xperia Z3X has been leaked on the web, although its validity still needs to be confirmed. Meanwhile, stick with us as more details will be leaked ahead of the Photokina 2014.
