Tamron has decided to revamp its SP-series from the ground up and the first model of the line-up is the SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens for full-frame cameras.

The SP-series has been available for a long time for beginner to pro photographers. Tamron has done a good job in offering lenses with a good price/performance ratio, but the company has felt the need to alter things a little bit.

It is time for a new SP-series, one that does not focus on affordable price tags. The new SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens is the first model in a long series that focuses on optical performance. It has been announced today, as the rumor mill predicted, and it will be released soon for cameras with full-frame sensors.

The new Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens will deliver a high image quality even when used at the widest aperture of f/1.8. The optic provides superior image quality from edge-to-edge and from corner-to-corner, so photographers can really take advantage of their big-megapixel cameras.

Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens is the first model of the revamped SP-series, which aims to deliver superior optical performance.

The image quality is ensured with an internal configuration consisting of 10 elements in nine groups with a couple of aspherical elements, one Low Dispersion element, and one eXtra Low Dispersion element.

Thanks to the LD and XLD elements, chromatic aberrations will be kept under control, so images will turn out very sharp. Moreover, the lens comes with eBAND and BBAR coatings that reduce reflections in order to make sure that ghosting and flare do not ruin your images.

The design includes a fluorine coating that covers the front element in order to repel oils, water, dirt, and fingerprints, thus making the lens easier to clean.

Tamron has designed the lens for full-frame cameras from Canon, Nikon, and Sony. The optic is moisture-resistant, therefore you should be able to keep shooting even when the weather conditions are not right.

A Vibration Compensation mechanism and an Ultrasonic Silent Drive have been added into the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens. The former will reduce camera shakes, while the latter is there to deliver autofocus. It is worth noting that the Sony unit does not have VC technology and that manual focus override is available on this optic.

The lens features a minimum focusing distance of only 20 centimeters / 7.9 inches. The lens measures about 80mm in both length and diameter, while weighing about 480 grams for the Canon version and 450 grams for the Nikon version.

Its release date has been scheduled for sometime in mid-October and its price has been set at $599. You can pre-order it right now at B&H PhotoVideo.
