Travel Photography: Habana, Cuba – The People

The greatest thing about Cuba has to be its people. No matter what they go through they keep on smiling. They are always keen to get into a photo and will go out of their way to please you… make sure you leave a little “tip” (we used a lot of lollipops).
This awesome gentleman was sitting there and he seemed to be writing. I went on my knees and he looked up at me with that great smile. I think a few shots, playing around with exposure compensation and he just kept on smiling. After I was done I approached him, showed him the pictures and offered him my Canadian pen… the smile reappeared, bigger than before.

Walking down the Malecón we ran into these kids. They were simply playing in the water by jumping off the ledge and into the water about 30 feet below, no big deal, right? But there’s a catch. They were running across a 4 lane highway to give themselves get some speed and distance. I took some shots and promised to give them some prints. The next day, we printed the shots and gave them to the kids…. It’s was like handing them a million dollars.

I was so surprised to see people working directly on the street. The guy below is fixing pots & pans, as you can see. Looks like the beer delivery cart also needed some repair.

I appreciate the spectacle of nature and revel in the creativity of technology. Being a photographer, in many ways, combines these two fascinations. See me at www.danielhurtubise.com or email me at daniel@danielhurtubise.com.

Wow…fantastic set of images. You captured the soul of Havana. I love that city. You are so right, even though buildings are amazing, the people give the city so much character and beauty.
