Chicago-based Wanderlust Cameras is using Kickstarter to propose a film shooter, called Travelwide 4×5 camera, which can travel with a photographer wherever he goes.

Wanderlust Cameras has made it clear that it loves film cameras. The company’s creators claim that their true love is the image quality provided by 4×5 analog film. However, they are not enjoying that thing which surrounds it and calls itself a camera.

Wanderlust Cameras seeking donations on Kickstarter for a lightweight 4×5 film camera

Justin Lundquist and Ben Syverson say that nobody loves to carry around a piece of  heavy machinery. This is how they came up with Travelwide, a beautiful and lightweight camera. Even tough it is slightly larger than a DSLR shooter, the 4×5 film camera is lighter.

Despite its size, the Travelwide 4×5 camera can easily fit into a conventional bag. Additionally, owners can choose to remove the accessories and the lens, making the film shooter even more transportable.

Unfortunately, the camera is not available on the market yet. However, photographers who want one, can access the device’s Kickstarter project page and pledge to the cause.

Travelwide 90 camera can be accessorized with a Schneider Angulon 90mm f/6.8 lens

The full name of the camera is Travelwide 90 because it has been designed around a 90mm f/6.8 Schneider Angulon lens. However, the optic is not included in the price, allowing backers to add any type of lens to the 4×5 camera.

According to Justin Lundquist and Ben Syverson, a 90mm lens on 4×5 film would provide a 35mm equivalent of 28mm, meaning that it should handle travel photography with ease.

As stated above, the product is lighter than some DSLR cameras. A Canon 5D Mark II with a 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens weighs 1,033 grams, while the fully-featured Wanderlust Travelwide camera weighs merely 630 grams, becoming the perfect companion for travelers.

Travelwide 65 camera is also available for big spenders

Additionally, people can choose a Travelwide 65 body, which is aimed at working with the Schneider Angulon 65mm f/8 lens. It shares the same body with the Travelwide 90, but this version offers a fixed focus lens, making it easier to operate and allowing photographers to keep everything in focus.

Either one of these cameras costs $99, but buying both versions means that you are getting a $9 discount. In order to receive the lenses in the package, backers will have to pay $299 for a Travelwide 90 kit and $399 for a Travelwide 65 kit.

The guys over at Wanderlust Cameras have also posted some photos, in order to demonstrate the properties of 4×5 film. The pictures are amazing and they will certainly convince a lot of photographers to donate to the cause.

Wanderlust founders have plenty of time to reach their goals

At the time of writing this article, the Travelwide 4×5 camera had received $35,665 out of the $75,000 goal. It is worth noting that there are 28 days to go, giving plenty of time to the project’s creators to raise the required money to start manufacturing the shooters.
