Sony will introduce a full frame E-mount version of the  Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, which is currently available for the company’s A-mount cameras.

Photographers will welcome a new camera type next month, as Sony is allegedly introducing an E-mount shooter will full frame image sensors. The company is currently making E-mount devices with APS-C sensors, while only one camcorder, the NEX-VG900, features a full frame sensor, but its upcoming device is the first aimed at photography.

As a result, there are not very many lenses available for E-mount full frame shooters. The current lineup of APS-C optics will be supported by the new NEX-FF camera, but the products will work only in crop mode, which is not something that users will enjoy.

This means that Sony must take care of this problem and, this way, it will give few reasons for photographers not to switch to the NEX-FF. Canon and Nikon have been blamed for not providing enough lenses for their EF-M and CX mounts, respectively, so the customers have “punished” the two companies.

The good thing is that Sony is rumored to introduce multiple lenses for the A9, ILCE-9, NEX-9, or whatever name the NEX-FF will adopt.

Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is currently available for Sony A-mount cameras. Sources say that the optic will make the jump from “A” to E-mount full frame cameras, when the NEX-9 becomes official in October.

The rumor mill has discovered that the 35mm f/2.8 and the 55mm f/1.8 will be present at launch. Both of these come from the PlayStation maker’s long-standing partner, Zeiss, but it seems like the German manufacturer has one more surprise in tow: 24-70mm f/2.8.

The Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is an A-mount optic. Moreover, it is one of the best-rated at all retailers, with users praising its optical quality and constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the focal range.

Sony will also contribute with at least two lenses to the full frame E-mount camera lineup. They are the 120mm f/2.8 and 70-400mm f/4-5.6. It is possible that the company will add a more familiar 18-55mm zoom into the mix, but the attention will be directed onto Zeiss.

The A-mount version of the 24-70mm comes with T* coating to cut down lens flare and aspherical elements to diminish distortions. Moreover, autofocus is very quick and silent, thanks to the Super Sonic wave Motor.

For the time being, the Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8 lens can be acquired for $1,798 through Amazon. It remains to be seen whether or not the NEX-FF version will be more expensive and to find out the exact date when the announcement is scheduled to take place.
