Leaked photos of the Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2 and 35mm f/2 lenses

The first photos of the Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2 and 35mm f/2 lenses have been leaked on the web along with the former’s specifications list.

Zeiss will announce a new series of lenses, courtesy of Photokina 2014. The new line-up will be called “Loxia” and will consist of optics designed for Sony E-mount full frame cameras, such as the A7, A7R, and A7S.

The first pair of models will include 50mm and 35mm versions, both with a maximum aperture of f/2. Ahead of their official product launch event, SonyAlphaRumors has managed to acquire the first photos of the two lenses, revealing them in their full glory along with the specifications of the 50mm model.

Sony FE-mount mirrorless camera owners will be able to benefit from the advantages of a Planar design when it comes to the Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2 lens.

This manual focus-only optic will offer a Planar design consisting of six elements divided into four groups. This design has been invented by Paul Rudolph while working at Carl Zeiss back in 1896.

The aperture will range between a maximum of f/2 and a minimum of f/22. Additionally, the minimum focusing distance will stand at 45-centimeter / 1.48-feet.

Zeiss’ upcoming 50mm f/2 Planar lens will provide an angle-of-view of 46.78-degree, which translates into 39.38 by 26.70-degree.

Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2 lens will also be aimed at Sony FE-mount cameras and will be unveiled at Photokina 2014.

Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2 lens will employ a Biogon design

On the other hand, the Zeiss Loxia 35mm f/2 lens will be based on a Biogon design, which has been first created by Ludwig Bertele in 1935 and has been manufactured by Carl Zeiss as of 1937.

The Biogon design is well-known for paving the way for ultra wide-angle lenses, therefore it is not a surprise that the 35mm f/2 will be based on this system.

Just like the Loxia 50mm f/2 version, the 35mm f/2 lens will only feature manual focusing support. A focus ring will be available on the lens along with an aperture ring.

As expected, both optics will sport electronic contacts therefore the Sony full frame mirrorless cameras will be able to read the aperture set by the users.

Loxia will be a new series of lenses just like the one Zeiss is providing for Fujifilm X-mount cameras, called Touit. The official announcement will probably take place at the beginning of September and the optics will be on-display at Photokina 2014.
