News agencies go “Judge Judy” on UK government copyright law
Several press agencies have joined forces for an aggressive judicial review over UK’s government plans to change the copyright laws. The consortium – that includes Associated Press, Getty Images, Reuters, Press Association, and the Federation of Commercial and Audiovisual Libraries – brings up the fact that the plans are without basis and should be under full Parliament scrutiny.
Broken Night horror movie, filmed with Nikon D800, released online
The Broken Night short horror movie is now available online. Internet users can watch the film, shot entirely with the Nikon D800, but the viewers discretion is advised as the movie is not intended for the faint of heart. The movie has been directed by Guillermo Arriaga, a well-known writer-director, who won the BAFTA Best Screenplay Award.
Nikon introduces online Parts Store
Nikon has opened its first online Parts Store for camera and lens owners in the United States. The Nikon Parts Store includes parts for equipment like DSLR cameras, Coolpix compact cameras, Nikkor lenses, and Speedlights as well as many other gear that is usually hard to find on the market.
Samsung added five new cameras to Smart Camera family
Samsung has launched its upgraded version of Smart Camera concept, together with five new cameras that run the new technology. It states that the new camera concept is designed with smartphone users on mind, thus combining touch-type big screens and Wi-Fi functionality for faster upload and sharing.
Speed Booster for photographic lenses, released by Metabones
Metabones and Cadwell Photographic have joined their forces and created a new optical accessory, designed specifically for mirrorless cameras with APS-C and Micro Four Thirds sensors. The optical and lens design are made by Brian Caldwell, the man behind Caldwell Photographic Inc.
Kickstarter supplies another photo gadget: the DUO TLR
Remember that older post we did about a lens holster designed by Preston Turk? Kickstarter delivers another great photographic gadget project. This time, it’s a TLR, or Twin Lens Reflex camera that, according to its designer, “produces stunning images on instant film and roll film”.
Nikon patents hybrid optical and electronic viewfinder
Nikon has filed for a viewfinder switch, which can toggle between optical and electronic viewfinders. The new hybrid viewfinder technology will become available in DSLR cameras soon, as Nikon will try to compete against Fujifilm’ cameras with this feature, such as the flagship X-Pro1 mirrorless shooter.

Dexter’s Season 7 looks amazing thanks to Nikon D800
Nikon D800 may be a DSLR designed for high-resolution photography, but it was used as the primary second-unit shooter on the set of Dexter Season 7. The camera operators, who shot the series’ seventh season, praised the D800, saying that the DSLR’s amazing color depth and dynamic range met all their demands.
New concept of lens holder for Nikon, designed by a young Boston entrepreneur
Young Boston-based entrepreneur and photographer, Preston Turk, designed a special lens holster that enables the user to switch between lenses without taking the extra steps of uncapping and capping them. His idea requires funding and you can support the cause by donating on crowd-funding website Kickstarter.
Canon remains top Japanese company in US patent rankings
One thing that shows the dedication for research and innovation is the amount of patents filed by a company. Canon remained the top Japanese patent filer in the United States for the eighth consecutive year. The company filed for 3,174 patents in the US, outpacing its Japan-based competitors, such as Sony.
First Canon Experience Store to be opened next week?
Canon is trying to get closer to its fans by offering them a complete hands-on experience. An inside source has confirmed that Canon is going to open its first Experience Store in the following days, while many other stores are currently being planned to be released in the coming years.
Rollei Powerflex 240 HD superzoom camera announced
Rollei has introduced a new digital camera called Powerflex 240 HD. The new compact superzoom camera will become available in the near future with a 24x optical zoom lens, in order to continue the company’s tradition which began in 1920 thanks to Paul Franke and Reinhold Heidecke.
Jessops fall into administration brings Canon and Nikon reactions
Just a few days passed after UK-based photographic retail shop Jessops entered into administration on January 9, and two of the biggest camera producers have already commented on the situation. Canon is disappointed by Jessops situation while Nikon aids repairs on its gear bought through Jessops’ retail stores.

Canadian astronaut, Commander Chris Hadfield has shared some extraordinary photographs of Planet Earth. He is currently on-board the International Space Station (ISS) in a five-month mission. He is also the first Canadian Commander of the ISS and has a keen eye for photography.
New Nikon J3 and S1 mirrorless cameras are not using an AA filter
Nikon is not using an anti-aliasing filter in its latest mirrorless cameras, called J3 and S1. The two interchangeable lens cameras, unveiled at CES 2013, are lacking an optical low-pass filter and are using a different technology, which has been introduced for the first time in the big-megapixel Nikon D800E DSLR.

The winners of the annual National Geographic Photo Contest have been announced. This year, National Geographic experts picked a surprising, yet duly-deserved, photo as the Grand Prize Winner and the photographer, named Ashley Vincent, received $10,000 for his masterpiece.
Giotto’s tripods get 30% slimmer than previous ones
Giotto’s has launched its brand new design tripods that enable users to save up to 30% more space than the previous series. According to Giotto’s website, the twelve new Silk Road YTL Series tripods are going to replace the MTL series tripods, launched in 2008. They feature a newly patented Y-shaped central column that keeps the legs closer packed.
Fujifilm X100S and X20 listed for pre-order at B&H
Fujifilm announced the X100S and X20 cameras at the Consumer Electronics Show 2013. The former is a high-end retro style compact camera continuing the tradition of the X100, while the latter is a point-and-shoot camera, meant to be a successor to the X10, both being premium X-series shooters.
New Canon LEGRIA HF G25 camcorder announced
Canon introduced a new camcorder to replace the older HF G10 in the high-end camcorder segment. It is called Legria HF G25 and it is packing some serious hardware, so it should serve as an alarm signal to Canon’s competitors in the camcorder department, like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and Toshiba.
Vanguard releases new products at CES 2013
CES 2013 brought novelties from the Vanguard camp. The imaging accessories producer unveiled its new products, the star of the show becoming the new GH-300T pistol grip ball head. One of the most important features about the new grip head is its shutter button, built directly into the handle.
