What camera and lenses do you have? Does it make you the photographer you are?
My favorite cartoons of all times is What the Duck. And of these amazing photography and Photoshop related cartoons, the best ever is this one.
So the other day, with What the Duck plush in hand, my daughter Ellie and I took a few pictures. And came up with this new spin on the cartoon. Feel free to share a link to this on your photography blog, photo forums, and Facebook. And if you still think “my camera takes nice pictures…” you can learn what camera and editing equipment I use in my photography, as I do get asked this question daily.
So next time you are thinking, “I need a better camera…” or “I need better lenses” remember that while quality camera and photo editing equipment certainly can help your photography, it is the photographer and skills behind the camera that matter most.

I wish I could take credit for this one!”Thanks! I taught it everything it knows!”
Last week, with a bit of a bee up my butt, I sent out this tweet …”Telling a person ‘your camera takes great pictures’ is kind of like saying ‘your pot makes really great stew'”.LOL!I know it’s just ignorance (as in not knowledgeable) but it stings sometimes, no? I must not be the only one because a whole lot of people chimed in on that one! :)Oh well, at least they’re liking a few of my amateurish shots. ha!
LOVE IT, and so true! Thanks for all the wonderful information that you give us daily that encourages us and helps grow at doing what we love.
I have a Nikon D90 that I think takes great pictures. Sure I would love to have the latest and the greatest, but I have learned that it is not the camera that does most of the work, but the 6″ behind the camera that really does the work. You need a good understanding of the camera and how to use it techincally, but the person taking the pictures has a lot to do with how the pictures turn out.
big puffy <3 love this!
Love this post!! I’ve also had the ‘compliment’ –> “Wow! Your photos look like a professionals!”
Superb, economical copywriting! Six words hammer a message point solidly, cleverly memorably:”My mouth gives really nice compliments.”Brilliant, Ellie and Jodi!
although those tools do help capture quality better images…
Amen Sister!
I shoot with a nikon d80 and my trustee 50mm 1.8 lens. sometimes the photo hobbyists out there who have ‘expensive’ cameras look down on me when they find out that i’m a professional photographer with the camera i have. it’s so frustrating but as long as i remember what my pictures look like and what theirs look like then i’m usually ok.
AMEN! I love that cartoon…when people say that to me, I say back…” Thanks for the insult! My Camera doesn’t take pictures I DO!”. Love the plush!
Love that Casey!! I will have to remember that one! Hearing “your camera takes nice pictures” is like fingernails down a chalkboard to my ears!!!
Too funny!
Love this! Reminds me of a customer that looked at her wedding photographs (that I took) and said wow these are the best pictures of me ever…my makeup artist did a really great job. 🙂
This is so true, I have been on the receiving end of this so many times LOL
OMG Alice! That’s horrible and funny! You should have shown her all the photos that you caught her at a bad angle… How’d your makeup artist do there? ;)I’ve heard- “your photos look professional!” Um thanks…. They are. lol. People are crazy. Another fun post might be clients and how they don’t understand copyright. “Feel free to use that photo on your website.” Gee, thanks. ;)Great post Jodi!
These are cute…
I suppose that only the ones laughing as they read this truly understand 😉 I can’t STOP laughing as I read the post and all the comments! People are so, well… how can I put it kindly? 😉
Casey…I love that come back and I will be “borrowing” it. The back handed compliment of “your camera takes great pictures” or “The camera you use makes all the difference” makes me just roll my eyes…uh, thanks?
Oh I’m learning very quickly how much I have to learn and that I have to take the time to do this constantly. I read, I ask a lot of questions and I keep pushing myself. I hope one day to call myself a photographer and really believe it.
love it jodi!
I wish I had this cartoon to whip out for those times when someone compliments one of my pictures and my mother-in-law says “Well, she has a very nice expensive camera”!
I love this! I have been getting a few of those “compliments” lately.
lOVE this post!
