46-megapixel Sony camera set for Q1 2015 announcement

Sony will allegedly introduce a new high-resolution camera, bearing a 46-megapixel full frame image sensor, sometime during the first quarter of 2015.

After the rumor mill has been focused on Canon’s upcoming high-resolution cameras, it is time to shift focus on Sony’s future plans.

The company has been rumored to launch new A-mount and E-mount cameras with big-megapixel sensors at Photokina 2014, but the event is over now and the devices in question have not been introduced.

This has not put an end to the gossip talks and it appears that the PlayStation maker will definitely announce such camera around the beginning of next year.

Sony A7R has the highest resolution sensor in the company’s line-up. Its status is said to be overtaken by a 46-megapixel camera, which will be unveiled in early 2015.

Similar tidbits have been mentioned in the past, but now it seems like the information is coming from someone who has been right in the past.

The claims include the fact that the brand new Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD lens has also been tested on a high-resolution Sony camera.

While the mount is not mentioned, it appears that the first lens of its kind with built-in image stabilization technology has been tested on a Sony camera with a 46-megapixel sensor.

Tamron’s tests have been conclusive enough to state that the lens is capable of handling the enormous amount of details provided by a 46MP sensor.

The timeframe for the introduction of this camera is said to be Q1 2015, meaning that it could happen anytime between January 1 to March 31, so do not hold your breath over a launch, yet.

Sony’s next high-resolution camera is probably an E-mount model

Although the company has repeatedly said that the A-mount is not dead, it is unlikely that the 46-megapixel Sony camera is the replacement for the A99.

The most likely solution is a new E-mount full frame mirrorless camera, which has been listed as “A7X” on a Chinese website prior to the Photokina 2014 event.

Other sources have referred to it as “A9”, but we should wait for a confirmation that this is indeed a FE-mount model before deciding what its name should be.

No further specs have been mentioned. However, we can expect the Japan-based company to add a very quick autofocus system to this device, similar to the one found in the A6000 APS-C mirrorless camera.
