Adobe Photoshop CS4 – announced today – tell me what you think…

I would love to hear your thoughts (in the comments) on Adobe Photoshop CS4 that was announced today.  For me every version is a must have.  But will it be a MUST HAVE for you?

If it is, you can PRE-ORDER from Adobe.  I am ordering after I finish this post.  I am so excited.  How pathetic is it that this excites me…  Upgrade from CS, CS2 and CS3 is $199 and full version is $699.  Upgrade from Elements is $599.  It will be available by the end of October.  Just in time for my birthday (October 30th – for anyone wanting to send me presents :))

Photoshop CS4

Here are some features I think looked amazing and to me would be reasons to upgrade (quoted from their site) and my thoughts on each in parenthesis:

CONTENT AWARE SCALING

This feature is enough reason for me to buy PS CS4 – you can scale a photo and leave the important parts alone – seeing this in action makes me almost salivate – WOW – I am psyched!  Wish I could play with this feature today!!!!!

SEE IT IN ACTION from Russell Brown (a lucky person who has his hands on PS CS4 already…)

Adjustment and Masks panels

Easily access every tool for nondestructive adjustment of color and tone. Quickly adjust specific image areas with easier access to all the tools for creating and editing nondestructive masks.

You know how much I stress things being NONDESTRUCTIVE so this sounds HUGE to me!

Richer painting and drawing toolset

Create or modify images with a wide assortment of professional, fully customizable drawing tools, paint settings, and artistic brushes. Simply drag to resize brushes and adjust for hardness as you paint and preview brush strokes.

Sounds fun – I need to see it to judge for sure.  Could be really useful.

Auto-blending of images

Easily create a single image from a series of shots that have different focal points with the enhanced Auto-Blend Layers command, which smoothly blends color and shading and now extends your depth of field, automatically correcting vignettes and lens distortion.

Sounds very useful!

Auto-alignment of layers

Create accurate composites with the enhanced Auto-Align Layers command. Move, rotate, or warp layers to align them more accurately than ever before. Or use spherical alignment to create breathtaking panoramas.

Sounds fun and helpful.

Extended depth of field

Combine a range of images, each with a different exposure, color, and focal point — with options to preserve tones and colors — into a single color-corrected image.

WOW – if it works – I am in!  Well I am in anyway – but this could be huge.

Better raw image processing

Enjoy superior conversion quality as you process raw images with the industry-leading Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 5 plug-in, which now offers localized corrections, post-crop vignetting, TIFF and JPEG processing, and support for more than 190 camera models.

Selective work – sounds good – though you all know me – most of my work is edited in photoshop not raw.  But this could be helpful.

Industry-leading color correction

Enjoy dramatically enhanced color correction with reengineered Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools that now intelligently preserve color and tone details. Make precise adjustments with Brightness/Contrast and Curves controls, the histogram, color channel lines, and a clipping preview.

This sounds amazing – I cannot wait to try it.

*** Here is a great place to see some examples of what CS4 will do.

I can’t seem to even get “Variations” to work in CS4, let alone see the icons in the arrange documents section. Is there any hope?

My checking account can’t handle the new versions every year and a half. The new options sounds great, but I just wish it wasn’t so much money every time!

I have CS4 already (I was a beta tester) and love it. I hate coming to work on CS3 at work! It is truly amazing! I loved the adjustment/masking panels and it really is a dream! The one thing they don’t tell you is that the clone tool now has a preview! So it’s no longer guess work!!! Just one of the things I got giddy about when trying to edit out my shadow, it was easier than anything!

I just got CS3, upgraded from CS. I think I’ll stick with it for a while and then upgrade later. Probably right before the CS5 is released. =)

I am totally as excited as you about the Content Aware Scaling feature. It is absolutely amazing! The Rotate Canvas looks exciting as well. So many new things it really blows me away how they can find ways to simplify tasks with each new version.

I think the feature I would like the best is “rotate canvas.” I work with my WACOM tablet religiously but I get frustrated when I have to make selections or mask lines horizontally. I have more control over the pen vertically. With rotate canvas I can swivel the canvas around just like I could a piece of drawing paper on my desk. very nice feature.

The content aware scaling is nice but I don’t see myself using it much.

Just checked out all these great new features on the Adobe CS4 Learning Center (http://www.photoshopuser.com/cs4/index.html) I am so glad to see Camera Raw updated too. Looks like the Bridge will work better. And check out the video about Live Brush Preview for the Cloning and Healing Tools.

CS4 is a must have for me due to 64-bit support on Windows. This will allow me to work with much larger images such as panoramas and very deep HDRs.

Holy Cow! That content aware scaling is amazing! I can’t wait for the upgrade!

Sounds very good. I’d like to see a simple tool like in Lightroom and Elements that is ‘white balance correction’. The Variations tool doesn’t work that well for me quite often, and some of the time levels adjustment fixes a colour cast (if there is a good grey point in the image). But an auto-white balance fix would be nice. Or am I missing something in CS3?
