Fujifilm and Panasonic announce new type of CMOS image sensor

Fujifilm and Panasonic have decided to join their forces, in order to create a new image sensor, that is a lot better than the ones found in conventional cameras.

Fujifilm and Panasonic have announced the development of a new type of CMOS image sensor, which is based on an organic photoelectric conversion layer, that will boost both dynamic range and light sensitivity.

Fujifilm and Panasonic’s new CMOS image sensor captures better photos in both brighter and darker environments

The announcement says that the number of pixels will not be increased too much further, as resolutions have already reached a respectable amount. This means that image quality should be increased by expanding dynamic range.

The new CMOS sensor is based on an organic photoelectric conversion coating, which is capable of significantly expanding the dynamic range, allowing photographers to capture vivid photos in dark environments.

This new organic CMOS sensor also prevents clipping in image highlights caused by overexposure, therefore it will be good for taking shots in very bright conditions, too.

The organic CMOS image sensor is based on a photoelectric conversion layer from Fujifilm, manufactured using Panasonic’s semiconductor device technology.

Both digital camera makers have added key elements to the new organic CMOS sensor

The two companies have found a way to combine a couple of their technologies, which will increase the sensitivity of the pixels so that colors will not mingle between them.

Panasonic has added a semiconductor technology to the mix, while Fujifilm has contributed with an organic photoelectric conversion layer. The former increases image quality, while the latter is used for boosting light sensitivity.

Fujifilm and Panasonic have created this image sensor to be more sensitive to light and to feature a high dynamic range. This means that cameras, powered by the organic CMOS sensor, will capture photos with vivid colors and less noise.

CMOS image sensor with industry’s highest dynamic range and 1.2 more sensitive to light

The press release claims that this new technology will lead to better image sensors. The new ones will have a dynamic range of 88dB, which is the highest in the digital camera industry for consumers. Moreover, the new CMOS sensor has a 1.2 times higher sensitivity than regular sensors.

Fujifilm and Panasonic say that compact cameras will become better as a result, despite the fact that both companies have decided to invest less money in the entry-level sector, in order to focus on higher-end models.

Panasonic will reduce low-end models by 60%, while Fuji will halve the entry-level series. Either way, expect the two parties to implement the new CMOS image sensor in their cameras in the near future.
