Canon 8D placeholders spotted at online retailers

Overseas retailers have begun putting placeholders for the so-called Canon 8D DSLR camera, suggesting that the EOS 7D Mark II is coming soon, but under a different name.

The Canon 7D Mark II has been rumored for a very long time, as the camera needs to be released in order to replace the aging EOS 7D. Although the device has not been revealed yet, online retailers have started putting a bunch of placeholders for it, but the name is rather different than expected.

Canon 7D replacement may be called EOS 8D and it may feature a 16.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, according to a Chinese retailer.

According to Russian and Chinese retailers, the EOS 7D replacement will be called Canon 8D. The name does not mean anything to photographers, as they are mainly focused on the product’s performance, rather than its name tags.

Either way, it may suggest that previous leaks, which included the name, have been wrong. Additionally, if placeholders are already showing up on the web, the DSLR camera may be closer than initially hoped. Nevertheless, EOS camera fans should not get their hopes too high, as this DSLR has been rumored for a very long time and it still has not become official.

The camera has been rumored to be announced in late 2013, but released on the market in early 2014. At this point, we should be too far from either of those dates, yet retailers seem to think that everything is happening sooner than expected.

New Canon 8D specs list is rather different from previous ones

The retailers are also providing some Canon 8D specs. ZOL says that the camera will feature a 16.2-megapixel APS-C image sensor, hot shoe for external flash, 45-point autofocus system, and an AV interface for video capabilities.

The current EOS 7D features an 18-megapixel sensor, while most rumors have said that 7D Mark II photographers are getting a 21MP or a 24MP sensor, so the retailer may be wrong about this. Also, it claims that the DSLR will have only an external flash, so no built-in one like its predecessor.

Another difference is represented by the number of AF points: 45. The precursor has a 19-point system, so this would be a welcomed addition. Either way, Canon fans should take this with a grain of salt and stay tuned for more information.

For the time being, the Canon 7D is available for $1,299 at Amazon, while its competitor, the Nikon D300S, can be purchased for $1,379 at the same store.
