Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX lens revealed

Tokina has announced the new AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX lens at the CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015, after previewing the lens at the Photokina 2014 event.

The CP+ 2015 event has been an opportunity for Tokina to introduce a couple of new lenses. The AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX and the Cinema AT-X 50-135mm T3.0 have been revealed during this major digital imaging show. However, the company has decided to give another optic more attention. It is a model that was previewed at Photokina 2014 and which was actually announced in early February, but it has somehow managed to slip by unnoticed: the Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX lens.

The company is expanding its range of zoom lenses with high optical performance for Canon and Nikon DSLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors at CP+ 2015.

The new model consists of the Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX lens, which will offer a 35mm focal length equivalent of approximately 16.5-30mm when mounted on these shooters.

It will provide a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range. This bright aperture will allow photographers to shorten the exposure time in low-light conditions.

Moreover, this wide-angle zoom lens will be useful at indoor or outdoor events, such as weddings, thanks to its fast aperture. The company also says that the lens will be able to autofocus in poorly-lit environments, courtesy of its f/2.8 aperture.

The lens features 14 elements in 12 groups, including a trio of Super-Low Dispersion elements, which will minimize chromatic aberrations. Three aspherical elements are included, too, in order to correct other optical defects and to increase the image quality.

Ghosting and flare will be kept under control thanks to multi-layer coatings that reduce internal reflections. Its filter thread is sized at 82mm and the front element does not move during focusing as the optic comes with an internal focus mechanism.

The Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX lens measures 92mm in length and 89mm in diameter, while weighing 560 grams / 19.75 ounces.

Tokina will release its AT-X SD 11-20mm f/2.8 (IF) DX lens for Canon and Nikon APS-C DSLR cameras as of March 2015 for a price of $599.95.
