When I started taking photos, I was completely oblivious to any art rules. This was both a disadvantage and an opportunity to pursue my goals without worrying about limits. The more I learned, the easier it became to take my photos to the next level, connect with other artists, and find my unique shooting style.

There were a few specific lessons that completely changed the way I looked at photography, lessons that would’ve helped me tremendously had I learned them sooner.

Here are 8 valuable things I wish every new (and even experienced) portrait photographer knew.

1 – You Don’t Have to Upgrade Your Equipment

…at least not immediately.

I didn’t have a proper camera when I started out. All I had was an old smartphone camera that produced photos with less than 5 megapixels. While I definitely yearned to own a professional camera, I had to work with what I had. This taught me how to make the most of limited equipment and how to find potential in simple items.

When you finally do upgrade your equipment, you’ll be so knowledgeable and grateful that your photos will improve very quickly.

2 – Your Style Will Evolve Naturally, No Matter How Inexperienced You Think You Are

I was always afraid of having a forgettable photography style. I was afraid of being a copy of every photographer I admired. The more I focused on my love for photography, however, the less important these worries became.

Pour your heart into your passion, your strengths, and your goals. Teach yourself how to photograph people, how to edit your own photos, and how to create interesting compositions. As you do these things, your style will evolve into something unique and unforgettable.

3 – Learn from Those Who Inspire You the Most

Surround yourself with photographers whose styles you admire. Make a folder or blog with your favorite images. Once you’ve collected a significant amount of images, study them. Pay attention to any similarities and differences between the photos. Which photos take your breath away? Why do you like them? Your answers will give you a better idea of your style and show you how to improve your own work.

4 – Join a Small Photography Community

Photography is massively popular, so much so that you might be afraid of not making any real connections with other artists. Don’t let this intimidate you. Join a small photography community, be it local or virtual, filled with people you can have conversations with. Before you know it, you’ll be a part of a strong support system that will nurture, encourage, and inspire you.

5 – Take Photos of Your Friends

Don’t feel pressured to photograph models or strangers immediately. To feel comfortable during a shoot, you need to understand your camera. To do that, you can practice by photographing your friends.

Taking photos with your friends will strengthen your bond and give you space to experiment without worrying about time, space, or judgment. Use this time to learn about different types of light, various camera settings, and poses.

6 – Self-Portraits Will Help You Understand Models (And Yourself) Better

Self-portrait photography will teach you to be patient and open-minded. In addition to helping you understand your camera better, it will encourage you to work on your confidence. Most importantly, it will build empathy. You’ll know what it feels like to be in front of your own camera. This knowledge will help you make your future clients feel comfortable in your presence.

7 – Natural and Artificial Light Are Your Friends

Even though natural light is praised a little more than artificial light, both should be mastered. No matter what type of lighting you prefer, you should learn how to appreciate all kinds of settings. This will make your photos more diverse, give you more opportunities to take gorgeous portraits, and help you find inspiration wherever you go.

8 – You’re Allowed to Take Breaks from Photography

Photography is allowed to frustrate, discourage, and upset you. You’re allowed to feel like a failure. When you do, make sure you put your camera down and focus on another interest.

Just because you love photography doesn’t mean you have to be obsessed with it 24/7. Acknowledge that you have other passions you can come to when you need a break. Being gentle with yourself during a time of discouragement will help you find inspiration quicker. That’s just how self-love works.

There’s a reason photography is your passion. Embrace it. Learn from setbacks, make new friends, and be kind to yourself. The rest will evolve on its own.
