Olympus 30mm macro lens coming by the end of 2016

Featured Products

Olympus is rumored to announce a macro prime lens with a focal length of 39mm that will join the existing 60mm f/2.8 macro lens in the company’s Micro Four Thirds line-up.

A lot of people are still waiting for Olympus to reveal several products by the end of this year’s first half. There are a lot of talks about the Kumamoto earthquakes, which are said to be the main cause why these products are not official, yet.

It is not the first time such natural disasters have caused plenty of damage in Japan, whilst claiming so many innocent lives. Getting back to the digital imaging industry, there are many cameras and lenses in the pipeline. The latest to be mentioned within the gossip mill is the Olympus 30mm macro lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras.

Olympus 30mm macro lens rumored to be unveiled this year

Olympus will launch a new macro lens with a 30mm focal length in order to complement the 60mm f/2.8 macro prime.

The optic will have a 30mm focal length, meaning that it will offer a full-frame equivalent of about 60mm when mounted on mirrorless cameras with Micro Four Thirds sensors.

The maximum aperture is unbeknownst to the source, but it should be leaked in the near future. As far as speculation goes, we have to remind you that the Japanese company is already offering a 60mm f/2.8 macro lens, so the wider version might employ the same f/2.8 aperture.

Olympus’ existing macro lens offers a top magnification rate of 1:1. However, users have other magnification rates at their disposal, such as 1:1.3, 1:2, and 1:4. The 60mm f/2.8 macro prime was priced at $500 at launch and we do not expect the 30mm version to be much more expensive.

Olympus E-M1 Mark II rumors recap

We are taking advantage of this opportunity in order to clarify a few things about the Olympus E-M1 Mark II. There are close to none certainties about the camera, but all evidence points towards a higher-megapixel sensor.

The increase will be fairly small, though, so you should not expect it to go any higher than 20 or so megapixels. The device will be marketed as a professional camera. We do not really know what that means, albeit some folks expect it to offer a faster burst mode.

There are some talks about 4K video recording. This is one of the most requested features by the users. Some say that it will have it, some say that it will not.

A source claims that there is some Panasonic exclusivity in this department, so Olympus cannot add it to the E-M1 Mark II in 2016. For what it’s worth, some have suggested that the company will block 4K video support until the end of 2016 and then release a firmware update in 2017 in order to enable it.

Nevertheless, this sounds like too much of a hassle and we are hoping that the companies will strike some sort of a deal before Photokina 2016. Finally, the camera will definitely be at Photokina 2016, as we have stated numerous times. That is all for now, stay tuned!
