Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS lens launched

The second FE-mount lens announced by Sony today is the FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom, which has also been designed to cover full-frame image sensors.

Sony introduced the FE 50mm f/1.8 prime for its own Alpha and NEX mirrorless cameras. This optic has been described as tiny and lightweight as well as affordable. The second unit of the day is bigger, heavier, and more expensive, but it is also targeting a different type of photographers.

It is said to be the longest reaching E-mount lens ever released. It can cover full-frame sensors, so it is actually a FE-mount unit. The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS lens is here and it reduces optical aberrations and distortions, thus allowing photographers to capture high-quality stills and videos.

Sony FE-mount camera users will be able to buy the new 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom lens as of May for $1,200.

The new product is packing four aspherical elements and a couple of Extra Low Dispersion elements to take care of optical flaws. Moreover, the Nano AR coating will continue the trend, meaning that it raises image quality by minimizing flare and ghosting.

As the focus is on image quality, the lens offers a number of other features. The list includes integrated Optical SteadyShot technology. The integrated stabilization system means that photos will be sharp from edge-to-edge and corner-to-corner.

The minimum focusing distance of the optic is 90 centimeters / 3 feet, whereas the maximum magnification stands at 0.31x. As a result, Sony says that the product can be used for macro photography.

Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS lens has a model number of SEL70300G and includes a linear actuator. This autofocus drive promises to offer silent and smooth AF across all shooting scenarios.

As it will be used on the field, the optic is weathersealed. The manufacturer has confirmed that dust and moisture should not cause problems to the lens, which is always a bonus.

The length of the product is 144mm / 5.67 inches, while its diameter is 84mm / 3.31 inches. The filter thread measures 72mm and the whole product weighs 854 grams / 1.88 lbs.

The released date of the telephoto zoom optic has been scheduled for May 2016, while its price has been set at $1,200.
