5,000 Friend Limit on Facebook: How Can a Social Networking Site Limit Friends?

5,000 Friend Limit on Facebook.  I heard the rumors… Turns out they were true.

Have you ever been told, “You have too many friends?” Or how about “No more friends for you!” Well today was my 1st time.  One day shy of 38 years of age, I was told I had too many friends and not allowed to make even one more.  Not by my mom, not by my husband and not by my kids .

Then who has the audacity to dictate how many friends I can have? Facebook.  Yes – you heard it correct.  Facebook, a social networking site has decided that I, Jodi Friedman, has too many friends.  And unless I tell un-friend someone, I cannot make any more friends. Actually it will not let me add join fan pages of others either.

This sounds crazy. Right?  After all I use Facebook as a social marketing/media tool to communicate with both my “real life” friends (high school, college, current) and those who attend my Photoshop workshops/trainings and who purchase MCP Photoshop actions. How can a company whose purpose is to connect people now limit me? Facebook’s Mission “is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” Does limiting friends fit into this “mission?”  It doesn’t in my mind.

I actually was aware this day was coming.  I remembered hearing others talk about this.  But I had a hard time believing it would happen to me.  I assumed the “Facebook limit” would be lifted by the time I got that many FB Followers.  I was wrong.  It is still in full effect.  You can ONLY HAVE 5,000 friends.  If I want more than 5,000 followers, I need to use a Facebook Page, or find a new social networking site.

I already have received 23 emails today from people that read something like this, “Hi Jodi, I tried adding you to Facebook but I received a message saying you have too many friends.  I didn’t know that FB set limits.  Let me know if there is any work around.”

Until Facebook comes to their senses I have three alternatives.  Unfortunately, unless someone stops being my friend I cannot approve more friends.

Here is what you can do:

  1. Join me on my Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/MCPActions/ – Facebook allows you to have unlimited “Fans” – but this does work slightly different.  The nice part is all of my “Fans” can interact with each other – post questions and comments – and even use a discussion wall. Please come and interact with me and each other. I also plan to do some quick contests on the Facebook Page that will NOT be on my blog.  So make sure to join in and check the wall and discussions often.
  2. Follow me on Twitter – https://twitter.com/mcpactions
  3. Share with me on my Flickr Group – https://www.flickr.com/groups/mcpactions?rb=1 – This is the best place to post your before and after images (or even just after) and show off what you can do using MCP Actions and after taking MCP Workshops.  I approve these weekly, so once I do yours will appear.

Meanwhile, if you learn of a way around this Facebook limitation, please let me know.  Thank you to my 5,000 friends.  I hope I can make more friends soon….

Your “friend” – if Facebook says I can be…

Oh Jodi…. I think that is horrible. As much as I would love to help. I like being your friend and do not want to give up the honor. :)So happy I found you early. It just means…. you are a force to be reckoned with!!

Do you know that right now it’s impossible to become a fan? The server is too busy and you get an error message.

You mean their whole fan system is down or you just cannot get to my fan page?

Crazy! I had no idea that they were limits.
