Canon is rumored to launch a 4K video recording camera, that will compete against the Sony A7S and Panasonic GH4, after a company’s Managing Director has claimed that Canon must address this sector and that such device will be released in the future.

There is a growing demand for 4K cameras, but the big players are still ignoring the requests of the users. Canon has recently introduced the 5DS and 5DS R, while Nikon has launched the D7200. However, neither of these cameras is capable of recording movies at 4K resolution. Meanwhile, the rumor mill says that Canon will launch no less than four mirrorless cameras by the end of 2015 and that at least one of these devices will be a 4K camcorder.

The information is coming amid a recent interview conducted by DPReview with Masaya Maeda, Canon’s Managing Director and Chief Executive of Image Communication Products Operations. Mr. Maeda says that the company must address the sector which belongs to devices such as the Sony A7S and Panasonic GH4. Moreover, he says that the manufacturer will launch something like this in the future.

Canon 4K mirrorless camera rumored to be released on the market in 2015

Sources are reporting that Canon will release four mirrorless cameras by the end of this year. The list includes EOS M shooters and camcorders that can capture 4K movies.

The EOS M3 has already been revealed, while the EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C500 Mark II are coming at NAB Show 2015 with 4K compatibility. This leaves us with one model, which may well be a Canon 4K mirrorless camera to compete against the Panasonic GH4, Samsung NX1, or Sony A7S.

Back in December 2014, the rumor mill said that the next EOS-series DSLR would be capable of recording movies at 4K resolution without the need of an external recorder. However, a few models have already become official and none of them has such capability.

Nevertheless, the NAB Show 2015 event is coming in mid-April and Canon might have a surprise for all its fans in the form of a compact mirrorless model or a bigger DSLR unit.

We will address the compact 4K camera market in the future, says Canon

Canon has once again confirmed through Masaya Maeda that it is aware of the growing demand for 4K shooters. The company’s Managing Director is claiming that Canon is investigating this market and that it will address the demands in the future.

Unfortunately, Mr. Maeda has not provided a timelime for the fans who are waiting for a Canon 4K mirrorless camera or DSLR. However, this is one of the few official confirmations that the Japan-based manufacturer is actually developing a consumer-bound product that shoots ultra high resolution videos.

Until it becomes official, stay tuned to Camyx and take these details with a pinch of salt!
