Canon 100D / Rebel SL1 becomes world’s smallest and lightest DSLR

Canon has officially announced the 100D / Rebel SL1, which has become the smallest and lightest DSLR camera in the world.

Mirrorless consumers have not been too kind to Canon, as the EOS M has not been a hit on the market. However, the company has decided to take a different approach by announcing the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera, as its measurements are closer to a mirrorless camera than to those of a DSLR shooter.

Canon 100D / Rebel SL1’s size when compared to both the EOS M mirrorless camera and the EOS 650D / Rebel T4i DSLR.

The Canon 100D has been the company’s worst-kept secret of 2013. Its specs and release date have been leaked multiple times in the past, making its official announcement a very formal introduction in the world of digital cameras.

Attracting more customers will not be easy, but the company is taking a huge bet with a very cheap price for a DSLR camera + kit bundle.  The Canon 100D / Rebel SL1 and the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens will cost $799.99, when it becomes available this April.

Photographers who do not want to buy the new lens should be aware that the new EOS 100D / Rebel SL1 body-only will merely cost them $649.99.

Additionally, the Canon 100D / Rebel SL1 is even more exciting as it is 25 percent smaller and 28 percent lighter than the recently-replaced EOS 650D. It measures only 4.6 x 3.57 x 2.74-inches and weighs only 14.36 ounces.

The Canon 100D / Rebel SL1 body-only will cost only $649.99 this April. At this price tag, users get an 18MP sensor with DIGIC 5 image processor.

EOS 100D / Rebel SL1 is all an entry-level DSLR photographer could ask for

For this price, users will get an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, the popular DIGIC 5 processor, 3-inch touchscreen, built-in flash, integrated optical viewfinder, and full HD video recording at 30 frames per second.

The DSLR camera can also capture photos in low-light conditions, as its ISO ranges between 100 and 6,400, a value which can be increased to 12,800, using the built-in settings.

Canon says that the EOS 100D / Rebel SL1 can capture four frames per second in continuous shooting mode. The world’s tiniest DSLR camera also sports the 9-point cross-type AF system with Hybrid CMOS AF II technology support in live view mode.

Canon 100D / Rebel SL1’s rear offers a 3-inch 1.04 million-dot LCD touchscreen.

Fixed 3-inch multitouch display allows users to adjust camera settings

The 3-inch ClearView II LCD touchscreen supports multitouch gestures, just like the touchscreen found in the new EOS 700D / Rebel T5i. The only difference between the two is that Rebel SL1’s display is not articulated.

The Canon 100D also features an Scene Intelligent Auto Mode system, which allows the camera to automatically detect movement, distance, face, brightness, and other conditions, in order to apply the best shooting settings in all scenarios.

Canon 100D / Rebel SL1′ top view is dominated by the built-in flash, hot shoe, scenes mode selector, control wheel, ISO and shutter button.

Multiple in-camera effects and photo-editing tools available for a small price

New scene modes have been added into the camera, the list including Candlelight, Kids, and Food. However, the most interesting new mode is called Effect Shot. With the help of this mode, the camera will capture two pictures, one with a pre-selected filter and the other one without a filter.

Photographers will have access to built-in photo-editing tools, allowing them to apply special effects and filters, such as Blur Simulation.

As stated above, the RAW shooting camera will become available in the US sometime in late April for a price of $649.99 for body-only, respectively $799.99 for the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens.
