Enhance Portraits Quickly And Professionally With Photoshop Actions

After you take a memory card full of images, the next step in the digital age is to edit them.  While the goal is to capture the best photo in camera, editing almost always helps.  Here are a few tips on how to enhance portraits quickly.

  1. Visualize the completed photo as you look through the viewfinder.
  2. Get to know the editing tools you have available.  Experiment with Photoshop actions and Lightroom presets in your free time, so that when you sit down to edit, you are not just playing and pressing buttons.  Know how to get your style and the look you are after.
  3. Establish a workflow that is close to the same every time.
  4. Learn to speed up your processes by editing all photos from the same lighting, environment in a similar way.
  5. Understand what’s behind the shortcuts you use – so get to know what a specific action or preset does so you can quickly adjust the opacity or know how it may impact areas like the hair.

Real-Life Example

Here is an example from a MCP customer Divian Conner. She said, “The Eye Doctor Sharpen layer is amazing. I never finish a photo with out using it.” Hearing that I know that she has a process in place and likely an efficient, established workflow.  Another example is that she has learned which actions she might need to mask off the hair, when colors purposely shift in the Fusion actions. As a result, she can edit fast.

A Before and After from Divian:

The steps are below.  She used three MCP Photoshop action sets to get this look: Magic Skin, Eye Doctor, and Fusion. And she could apply these same steps to all the photos from this session and enhance portraits quickly using this workflow.
