Zeiss has officially confirmed that it is working on an Otus 85mm f/1.4 lens that will be released on the market sometime in 2014.

Photographers have always appreciated the German quality of imaging products. Leica and Zeiss have received praises thanks to the optical excellence found in their lenses and cameras, respectively.

Lately, things have not gone according to plan, especially for Leica, but Zeiss continues to be at the forefront of digital photography. According to DxOMark, the best lens in the world is the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4, which provides amazing image quality when mounted on the Nikon D800.

DxO Labs’ tests are pretty accurate and they have confirmed that the Otus 55mm f/1.4 lens is capable of delivering world-class performance. This has “forced” a lot of photographers to beg the company to make another Otus lens with a longer focal length.

Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Otus lens confirmed by the company itself. The new optic is coming in 2014.

According to the official website of the manufacturer, a new model is on its way and it will hit worldwide markets as of 2014. The new version is the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 lens and will probably be released for Nikon and Canon full frame DSLRs, just like the first in the Otus series.

An accurate release date is not provided by the German maker, but there is absolutely no need to rush things. The company needs to focus to bring forth the same image quality that made DxOMark’s experts to claim that the 55mm f/1.4 model delivers a “peerless performance”.

The market will be rather limited, as the price of the lens is prohibitive for most users. Rumors say that it will be priced near the $4,000 mark, just like the 55mm version, which is available for $3,999 at B&H Photo Video.

About the Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* lens

The Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 lens features a 77mm filter thread, T* anti-reflective coating that reduces optical flaws, a focusing distance of 50 centimeters and a magnification rate of 0.15x.

This optic does not come with autofocus, nor with image stabilization therefore users will have to rely on their cameras for the image stabilization or to keep their hands really steady.

The design of the 85mm model will probably be similar, so if you want to buy this lens to further your portrait photography skills then you should start cutting down costs and raise some money for 2014.
