Nokia EOS 41-megapixel smartphone announcement date is July 11

Nokia has practically confirmed that its July 11 event will finally see the EOS 41-megapixel smartphone announced for photography enthusiasts.

There is no secret that digital camera sales have dropped. This fact has triggered an unprecedented chain of events, forcing manufacturers, such as Olympus, Panasonic, and Fujifilm, to kill their low-end compact series.

Smartphone sales are “killing” low-end digital cameras

The main reason why consumers are no longer buying cameras is the recent smartphone emergence. Millions of high-end mobile devices are sold and their image sensors are capturing decent shots, which can be quickly shared on social networks.

Since cameras are bigger and not-so-social-network-friendly, most people are choosing to buy a more expensive phone, rather than purchasing a pair of low-end devices (cheap smartphone + cheap camera).

Nokia zoom reinvented teaser
Nokia says that zoom will be reinvented on July 11. In reality, this is a teaser for the upcoming EOS 41-megapixel smartphone.

Nokia’s upcoming 41-megapixel camera phone will not help camera makers at all

Nokia is offering a a smartphone capable of taking more-than-average shots. It is called 808 PureView, but it is based on a dead operating system, called Symbian. The Finland-based company is now entirely focusing on Microsoft’s Windows Phone.

Despite the fact that the Lumia 920 / 925 / 928 are offering one of the best cameras on the market, this is not enough and its fans have been adamant that they want to see the 41-megapixel PureView sensor added into a Windows Phone-powered handset.

Words of a so-called Nokia EOS have been heard for a long time, but it seems like its time has finally arrived. The Finnish firm is holding an event on July 11 and all evidence points to the fact that the 41-megapixel camera phone will be there.

Nokia 41 million reasons teaser
Nokia says there are “41 million reasons” to watch its event on July 11. The rumored EOS smartphone is rumored to feature a 41-megapixel camera.

Nokia EOS 41-megapixel smartphone event takes place on July 11 in New York

Nokia has begun teasing the event, inviting people to witness the reinvention of the zoom on June 11 in New York City. Furthermore, the latest teaser says that seeing the “zoom reinvented” is just one of the “41 million reasons” to “zoom in” on the press conference, which will be live-streamed over the web.

The Nokia EOS 41-megapixel smartphone will capture photos at about 8-megapixel in quality. The rest of the megapixels are useful for oversampling the actual shot, meaning that 100% crops will look like the image has been captured with a full-size DSLR.

The zoom reinvention might also refer to the company’s recent investment in Pelican Imaging, a company which makes image sensors capable of Lytro-like light-field photography. Such sensors would allow smartphones users to refocus their photos after taking them.

Nokia EOS 41-megapixel smartphone leaked
A Twitter user has leaked this photo of the alleged Nokia EOS. The smartphone’s back is dominated by a circular lid, which may provide enough space for a 41-megapixel sensor.

Nokia EOS specs and photos have already been leaked

The Nokia EOS specs have also been leaked by trusted sources. The device will run on the latest Windows Phone 8 version and it will pack built-in 32GB storage, 4.5-inch or higher OLED touchscreen at 1,280 x 768 resolution, FM radio, and the aforementioned 41-megapixel camera with Xenon flash.

Moreover, the 41-megapixel handset has also appeared several times on the web, courtesy of a Twitter user who has managed to get his hands on a test unit.

Information coming from the rumor mill and Nokia’s teasers are going hand-in-hand, so we will certainly witness the EOS launch next month.
