Sony may be working on two new RX-series cameras with full frame image sensors, one of them featuring a curved sensor, while the other one employing a conventional, flat sensor.

The summer of 2014 has brought us a new RX100 compact camera. The RX100 III has become official with a new 20.1-megapixel 1-inch-type sensor and 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens.

Sources have hinted that this device will be joined by a full frame RX model, too. However, the camera, which has been said to be called RX1s or RX2, has failed to show up on the market.

According to the latest information, these two may be different cameras, one of them with a curved sensor and the other one with a flat sensor.

Sony RX1R will be replaced by the RX2, a compact camera which is supposed to feature a 36.4-megapixel sensor and 35-70mm f/2.8 lens.

Sony RX2 specs list to include 36.4-megapixel flat full frame sensor

Some of the Sony RX2 specs have just been leaked, courtesy of SonyAlphaRumors. The compact camera will feature a regular, flat sensor, instead of a curved unit, such as the sought-after RX1s.

The image sensor is said to be same version which can be found in the Sony A7R full frame E-mount camera. This means that the new shooter will be capable of capturing photos at a resolution of 36.4-megapixel.

If this becomes true, then this will become the ultimate compact camera that will provide an amazing image quality.

Currently, the RX1R features a 24.3-megapixel FF sensor without an anti-aliasing filter, which means that image sharpness is increased, although the camera will be more susceptible to moiré patterns.

RX2 may become Sony’s first RX full frame camera with a zoom lens

The source is claiming that the RX2 will be the first RX full frame camera with a zoom lens. Both the RX1 and RX1R come packed with a Zeiss 35mm f/2 lens, while the RX1s is supposed to employ a Zeiss 35mm f/1.8 lens.

Sony will put a 35-70mm f/2.8 lens into the RX2. It will be very compact and will offer a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout its focal length range.

It is said that curved sensors are not really zoom-friendly, yet, and the Japan-based company is aiming to diversify its offer, which includes adding a zoom lens to a full frame compact camera.

An announcement date has not been provided, but a difference source has recently revealed that an RX2 camera is coming in early 2015. For the time being, all we can say for sure is that the RX1R is available at Amazon for about $2,800.
